Culture and Leadership

For an organization to achieve competitive excellence, it must be able to do something faster and more precise than anyone else in the industry has done before, at a pace and quality never imaged. To accomplish this, a company must have a strong culture, a talented workforce committed to operate with unbreakable discipline and leadership at all levels. At Metalex, we take a deliberate approach to ensuring our culture and operating system position our self-directed workforce to be the best and to do their best for all of our customers, adding value through an unrelenting commitment to continuous improvement, innovation and teamwork.

WATCH - WORKING AT METALEX

A Culture of Continuous Development & Growth

Since we started in 1971, Metalex has grown to become one of America’s leading contract machining companies, a domestic and global leader in design, engineering, fabricating, machining, manufacturing and assembly services –– and the proven, one-stop resource for companies across multiple industries. To handle every aspect of customer projects and offer the highest level of service, we leverage experience and expertise garnered from each project and industry to provide you with the latest, best practices, optimal solutions and superior workmanship. All from the best team in manufacturing.

When people are encouraged and empowered to be their best, when they are rewarded for what they learn, what they teach and what they contribute to the bottom line, they rise to the occasion – this is the guiding ethos behind Metalex’s company culture. Our self-directed workforce is entrepreneurial in both spirit and actions. With opportunities to participate in ongoing education and mentoring programs, as well as a “no teammate stands alone” philosophy, Metalex team members are given every chance to be their best. As a result, Metalex has a team of exceptional, motivated individuals who take enormous pride in their contribution to each customer’s success – and who enable the company to take on projects that others deem too difficult, regardless of tolerances and timelines, and complete them on schedule.

The Interaction Without Boundaries Process

Interaction Without Boundaries™ (IWB) is Metalex’s proprietary process for ensuring workflow excellence. A powerful tool for communicating expectations between and among Metalex teammates, IWB brings a new level of clarity to each person’s role, enables smooth transitions between each step of a project’s life, and, ultimately, ensures optimal quality, productivity and cost efficiencies for Metalex and its customers. But the measure of IWB is not in processes, procedures or systems alone; IWB is the team, all of whom see Metalex as "our" company. Their day-to-day actions and winning attitudes act as the linchpin for our business’ success.

The IWB process gives every teammate the opportunity to identify and correct significant disconnects between estimated vs. actual hours in an environment where all teammates are accountable, and no one stands alone. When a significant disconnect is identified at any point in the manufacturing process, the project engineer organizes a small team meeting with all the required teammates to complete an Affordable Supplier worksheet, which requires teammates to review how the price quoted to the customer compares to real-time actual costs, as well as the ideal costs and best possible competitive costs, all informed by actual data and market analysis.

Using this simple process, Metalex keeps the scoreboard visible for all to see and challenges teammates, cells, and areas to perform at their very best to ensure lasting value for our customers. At the same time, we provide our teammates with the opportunity to be the best they can be.

Leadership at Every Level

Organizations never run themselves; you need leaders, lots of leaders to run them if you want your company and team to be successful. At Metalex, regardless of whether you’re a co-op student or the company president, you’re expected and empowered to take ownership of your area of responsibility.

Our flat organizational structure requires leaders at every level, which means we define all the processes it takes to perform our work, from requests for quotes to product shipment. We all take responsibility for our ISO/AS Quality Management System, and our procedures allow us to focus on consistent performance, continuous improvement and a commitment to aggressively correcting and addressing problems – a process that begins with a meeting every morning and notes every night.

Morning Meeting – Come Prepared, Leaved Informed

Every morning at 7:00 a.m., teammates meet to get the day started with open communication, knowledge sharing and problem solving. Each teammate is expected to come prepared and leave informed, with an ongoing all-out effort by all to keep the meeting brief by eliminating confusion, duplication and interruptions. This reduces the need for additional meetings during the remainder of the day and allow the Metalex team to focus on satisfying customer needs.

Larry Gorman
After 40 years of true excellence as a Metalex teammate, Larry Gorman, left his teammates with this message on the day he retired:

Metalex – This is mostly to the new Metalex employees, I want you to understand how much this company meant to those who came before you and I ask that you please ensure it will continue to mean as much to those who will follow you. Thanks.
