Our customer, a leader in the automotive industry, searched for over two years for a supplier that could grind micron-close tolerance transmission shafts for their CVT continuously variable transmissions. In addition to the challenge of consistently achieving the close tolerances, production of two types of CVT shafts (Primary and Secondary) needed to be up and running within 120 days in order to support Ford’s assembly schedule and avoid costly production delays.
Metalex partnered with our customer and United Grinding Technologies to design a four machine production cell consisting of one small lathe, two Studer cylindrical grinders and a Jung ball grinder, in a temperature controlled environment. Ford placed the order with Metalex in November. The machines were expedited from Germany, arriving in December, and by early February, Metalex began shipping production parts to our customer for assembly into their transmission. Within a few weeks, Metalex was running two shifts and producing over 200 shafts a day.
In addition to the challenge of setting up a production cell in less than three months was developing the capability to consistently hold miron-tight tolerances and achieve super fine surface finishes required to meet our customer’s CPK and qualify for production. The CVT 23 Shaft production cell is an excellent example of how Metalex partners with our customers and suppliers to meet challenging time and cost deadlines.
